Letchworth State Park, often dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the East,” stands out as one of the most breathtaking regions in the eastern United States. Here, the Genesee River rushes through a gorge, cascading over three significant waterfalls amid towering cliffs, some reaching heights of up to 600 feet, all enveloped by verdant forests. Visitors can explore a network of 66 miles of hiking trails, catering to various levels of skill and interest.
The Falls
Letchworth State Park is famous for its beauty and its fifty waterfalls. Although Letchworth State Park boasts numerous waterfalls, three particular cascades along the Genesee River steal the spotlight: Upper Falls, Middle Falls, and Lower Falls.
Interestingly, the Genesee River originates in northern Pennsylvania and flows northward through the park. Despite common assumptions, Upper Falls, situated at the southernmost point of the park, is the first of the three major falls encountered along the river’s course.
While exploring the park can easily occupy several days, visitors can marvel at the park’s primary attractions—the three main waterfalls—in just a few hours. Upper Falls and Middle Falls are conveniently accessible via wide trails and close proximity to parking areas. However, a brief hike is well worthwhile to behold Lower Falls, adding depth to the experience of Letchworth’s natural splendor.
Upon exiting Letchworth State Park, the Genesee River navigates through the Mount Morris Dam, which is the largest concrete dam east of the Mississippi River. Moving northward beyond the park, the river encounters two additional notable waterfalls situated in downtown Rochester before ultimately emptying into Lake Ontario.
Upper Falls
As previously mentioned, Upper Falls holds the distinction of being the southernmost of the trio of waterfalls within Letchworth State Park, positioned along the Genesee River. Despite being the second tallest of the three primary falls, standing at approximately 70 feet in height, its horseshoe-shaped descent imbues it with remarkable beauty.
One of Upper Falls’ most distinctive features is the presence of a bridge soaring over 200 feet above the river. This active railroad bridge adds a unique dimension to the scenery, offering captivating opportunities for both observation and photography. Witnessing trains traverse this bridge adds an extra layer of wonder to the experience.

Middle Falls
Middle Falls reigns as the tallest cascade along the Genesee River within Letchworth State Park, towering impressively at 107 feet in height. Personally, I find it to be the most awe-inspiring of the park’s waterfalls, and I would venture to say it ranks among the most spectacular in all of New York.
Situated a mere few hundred yards downstream from Upper Falls, Middle Falls is conveniently accessible via Trail #1, which leads directly past this magnificent natural wonder. Additionally, it lies adjacent to the Falls Area parking lot, making it easily reachable for visitors eager to witness its grandeur.
Lower Falls
Among the trio of primary waterfalls in Letchworth State Park, Lower Falls presents the slightly more challenging journey for visitors, albeit still quite manageable. This assessment, however, is relative, considering the ease of access to the other falls, which are conveniently located near parking areas.
To reach Lower Falls, visitors embark on a hike of less than half a mile from the Lower Falls Parking Area. While the distance is modest, reaching the stream level involves descending around 125 steps, adding a touch of adventure to the experience.

Attractions
Beyond its natural splendor, Letchworth provides an array of activities and programs, including nature walks, historical tours, performing arts events, and educational lectures. Thrill-seekers can embark on whitewater rafting or kayaking adventures, while those seeking tranquility can relax by the swimming pool or take to the skies in a hot air balloon, offering a truly unforgettable perspective of the park’s beauty. Additionally, the park offers trails suitable for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing, ensuring year-round outdoor enjoyment.
During winter months, the park transforms into a winter wonderland, inviting visitors to enjoy activities such as snow tubing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.
