Ten Reasons Why You Are Not Achieving Your Goals

February 2nd, 2023

The New Year is here and with it the desire to change our lives. Many people set new goals each year, but very few actually achieve them. Have you ever wondered why you are not achieving your goals?

Here are ten reasons why you may have a hard time sticking to your goals.

One:

You set too many goals for yourself and you are overwhelmed. You cannot seem to be able to prioritize them.

Overwhelmed.

Two:

Your goals are too broad. Goals that sounds something along these lines:  ‘I want to make a million dollars’ or ‘I want to be a good mother,’ are not goals, but dreams. To create a viable goal, you need to follow these tips. First of all, you need to start with ‘I will,’ not ‘I want to.’ Second of all, your goals need to be specific. You need to ask yourself all sorts of information questions like: what, when and how. Then, you need to draft the goal and create a timeframe for it. Finally, you need to write it down.

Three:

Your goals are not measurable. It is not possible to say whether you have achieved the goal. You need to ask yourself: ‘How will I know I have achieved my goal?’ For example, how will you know that you are a good mother? There needs to be a definition of a good mother in place and conditions upon which being a good mother depend.

Checking your achievement against a checklist is a good idea.

Four:

Your goals are not realistic. You want too much and it is not possible to achieve the goal at this time. You need to adjust some parts of the goal to make it achievable or create a set of steps that indicate how you are going to get help reaching the goal.

Five:

You set your goal because it is something you have always wanted, or it is something that everybody else wants. Sometimes the circumstances change or you change and your goals are no longer relevant because you have moved on, want something different or you changed your priorities.

Don’t be afraid to be different. Choose your own direction.

Six:

Your goals lack a timeline. When will you achieve the goal? By what date? Do you need one year or three years to accomplish the goal?

Seven:

You have not outlined the small steps. You have created the goal, but you do not know where to start. What do you do first, second and last?

It is easier to follow clearly defined steps.

Eight:

You were doing so well, but then you got stuck on one hard point and you cannot get unstuck. Time passes and you cannot seem to get past that obstacle.

Nine:

You do not see any results and you get discouraged. The more you think about your goal, the more impossible to achieve your goal becomes. You were working so hard and nothing came out of it. It is just taking too much time.

Ten:

Having to constantly work on the goal is hard and you are tired. You come home at the end of the day and you still have to make dinner and do homework with the children. Working on your goals seems like just another chore. You are burnt out.

Burnout can undermine your desire to continue working on your goal.

Hopefully, this article helped you discover why you are not achieving your goals.

Have you ever gotten stuck on one of the above? How did you overcome the dire strait? Were you able to achieve your goal after all?
