Word of the Week: ‘Celebrate’

Let’s talk about the word ‘celebrate‘ today. It is going to be used a lot during the next few months with Rosh Hashana, Navaratri, Thanksgiving and Diwali just around the corner from now.

Celebrate: Verb: regular verb: celebrated, celebrated

  1. to observe or commemorate an event with ceremonies or festivities

We celebrate Christmas with a festive dinner and a visit to church at midnight.

2. to state publicly, proclaim

The newspaper celebrated the end of Cold War in bold letters.

3. to praise, to present in a good light, to express admiration for something or someone

His poetry celebrated love and youth.

4. to lead a religious ceremony

The priest celebrated the Mass.

5. to recognize a special occasion and make it special by participating in festivities

People celebrate Canada Day with parades and barbecues.

Celebration: noun

The Thanksgiving celebration consisted of a feast of turkey, stuffing, roasted sweet potatoes and cranberry sauce.

Celebrator: noun

Somebody who celebrates an event

A mother speaking to her young child: Who is our little celebrator today? How old are you?

Celebrant: Noun

Somebody who officiates a ceremony

The celebrant presided over the Eucharist.

Celebratory: adjective

Alma got a new job, so we went out for a celebratory dinner with a couple of friends.
