Welcome to Week 4: Shopping for Clothes
Welcome to Week 4 of the Weekly Four-Skill English Challenge! This week, you’ll explore another common everyday activity in Canada—shopping for clothes. Whether you’re looking for a new jacket, checking different sizes, asking about colours, trying something on, or comparing prices, knowing the right English words and phrases can make shopping easier and less stressful.
In this challenge, you’ll practise all four language skills through activities based on real-life shopping situations. You’ll start by listening to a conversation between a customer and a shop assistant, then practise speaking about your own shopping habits and take part in a clothing-store role-play. Next, you’ll read about someone shopping for a new jacket and answer questions to check your understanding. Finally, you’ll write about your own experience buying clothes.
Along the way, you’ll learn useful vocabulary and everyday expressions such as Can I try this on?, Do you have this in a medium?, It fits perfectly, and I’ll take it. You’ll also learn a helpful Canada Tip about sales tax and what to expect when you see a price on a clothing tag in an Ontario store.
By the end of this week’s challenge, you’ll be able to:
- understand common conversations between customers and shop assistants;
- use everyday clothing and shopping vocabulary with greater confidence;
- ask about sizes, colours, prices, and fitting rooms;
- describe clothes and explain what you like or dislike;
- ask for help and communicate your needs in a clothing store; and
- understand an important shopping practice in Canada, including how sales tax is added to the price at checkout.
Take your time and complete each activity at your own pace. Don’t worry about making mistakes—every mistake is an opportunity to learn something new. Try saying the useful expressions aloud, practise the speaking activity with a partner if possible, and use the new vocabulary when you have an opportunity to go shopping.
Remember, the goal isn’t to speak perfect English. The goal is to become more comfortable using English in real-life situations. Every week you complete brings you one step closer to communicating with greater confidence in your everyday life in Canada.
